Tapiola is a gentle, dramatic piece. The rhymed description Sibelius gave references forests of the north, and it's easy to get that feeling from it. There are moments of levity and moments of foreboding, but it's subdued, in a gentle darkness, and quite accessible without getting in your face. There's life in there, but it's also hiding. Its subtlety is its strength and it's engaging you to continue to draw you in throughout, making for a short but impactful work that you don't realise its strength of immediately.
